Tulip fever

From the tulip fields of Amsterdam to a new print in store, we're falling for spring's most joyful flower.

Tulips arrive like a celebration of Spring. After the long grey hush of winter, their colours rise from the earth—scarlet, golden yellow, soft blush pink, and deep violet—each bloom standing tall on a slender green stem. There is something both simple and elegant about a tulip. Its shape is clean and graceful, a perfect cup of colour opening gently to the light.

Originally cultivated centuries ago and beloved across gardens and landscapes, tulips have long symbolised renewal, beauty, and the fleeting magic of the changing seasons.

In the morning sun they stretch open, following the warmth of the day, and by evening they fold inwards again, as if resting. A vase of tulips indoors brings a quiet freshness to any room - something hopeful, something alive. They even wither and die beautifully, quietly arranging themselves into a soft waterfall over the edge of the jug.

Their blooms don’t last long at all in the garden, but perhaps that is part of their charm. For a few bright weeks, they transform gardens, parks, and windowsills into vibrant displays of life and colour. And then they are gone. Their last petals clinging desperately onto the stem as if wanting to give us a very last moment of joy before taking their final breath.

Tulips remind us that beauty does not have to be complicated. Sometimes it is simply a single flower, standing tall in the spring air, catching the light and turning an ordinary day into something a little more colourful.

“If you have two pennies, spend one on bread so you can live, and the other on a flower so you know why.”

Spot Philippa

White Coco’s Philippa, the manager of our Burford shop, has been in Amsterdam this April wearing our “Tulips Top”. Spotted despite possibly trying to get away from it all by camouflaging herself in a tulip bed. This pretty top with her simple almost childlike tulips is 100% cotton and pure joy on a warm Spring day.

“When it's Spring again I'll bring again Tulips from Amsterdam”

In the same fabric, throw a piece of Tulip Fever over your shoulder and face the world with a smile. Our Mariette Bag is the perfect size for a day out sightseeing…

A book we love

Written by garden designer Sean A Pritchard, this gorgeous book (looks fab on coffee tables) shows you how to plan a garden so that every month of the year there's something to bring indoors and display. From the cheer of Spring tulips to the velvety richness of late-summer dahlias, from the deep glow of golden autumn leaves to the optimism of late-winter catkins.

We stock this stunning book (which makes a great gift, by the way) at White Coco
